To be likeable or hated

what do you think of people who had almost no quailty of leadership as prescribed in books yet created amazing success stories and many followers? I think more than anything else it is 'perceived belief 'that they can make it happen'. sometimes it is a strong personality which has low humility but seen as a person who wud brook no nonsense while chasing the big goal. Many people confuse 'likeability' with 'doability'factor in a person.A coach of a team however liked by the team, is of no use if he can not make team practise hard and ensures victory(hated for tough discipline.) so,some ruthlessness and drive becessary?
